Bangkok → Koh Samui

There's no direct ferry from Bangkok to Koh Samui — the island sits off Thailand's southern Gulf coast, so every traveller rides the same clever combination: a long-distance bus south to the coast, then a ferry across to the island. Operators stitch these two legs together into a single through-ticket, making the 12–14 hour door-to-door journey from central Bangkok to Nathon Pier on Koh Samui as simple as boarding one coach and following the crowd at the pier. Services run daily year-round, and the route is Thailand's busiest overland island connection.

You have two main paths to choose from. The Lomprayah route via Chumphon is the fastest and most comfortable: a VIP air-conditioned bus covers the ~7-hour run from Bangkok, then a high-speed catamaran crosses the Gulf in about 2 hours. The Raja/Seatran/Songserm route via Surat Thani is cheaper and more frequent: an ~8-hour bus to Surat Thani, then a 1.5-hour ferry (often a big roll-on/roll-off car ferry) from Donsak Pier. Both arrive at Nathon Pier on Samui's quieter west side, about 30–40 minutes from the beach strips of Chaweng and Lamai.

Booking tip: always book a through-ticket, not separate bus and ferry legs. One booking covers the whole journey, your luggage stays with you through the transfer, and the operators time the bus arrivals to meet the ferries — so you won't be stranded waiting at Chumphon or Donsak.
